Abhinav Bindra, recommends a video called ‘Nothing Can Make You Happy’ by Rupert Spira.
In that video Rupert says, fundamentally, happiness is a constant. As a child, if you get a toy, you are happy.
When you grow up and you buy a house, you are happy.
1. He says the happiness that you experience in both those instances, with a toy or a house, is the same. It is not qualitatively different.
2. Secondly, he says that happiness is like the blue sky that is always there. It is you who are handing over your happiness to the presence of clouds.
When the clouds are present, you are scared for you know they will soon go away.
If the clouds are not there you lament that other places have clouds, why you don’t have it?
The SKY represents acceptance.
The CLOUDS represent possessions.
Clouds come and go. Things come and go. People come and go. The skies always remain.
3. The third thing he says is that think of the things that make you unhappy. Ask yourself is the situation really so bad?
How to know if the situation is really bad? Well, is there anyone in the world who is going through worse yet ‘not so unhappy’?
If the answer is, ‘Yes, there are many people who are facing WORSE situations yet managing well’, then, it is not the situation that is making me unhappy. I am making myself ‘unhappy’.
