Dearest Darling Friends,

A few weeks ago, on Aug 29th, I was visiting the office of a dear friend of mine in Mumbai, Monish Ghatalia.

His office is on the 11th floor. I saw three different kinds of lifts there.

1. One set of lifts served floors 9th and above.

2. Another set of lifts served the offices till the 8th floor.

3. There was this one lift that stopped at every floor.

Lift numbers 1 and 2 were right on the top floor of their destination. The lift that stopped at every floor was on the ground floor. We decided to hop into that lift (number 3) hoping, it won’t stop at EVERY floor, right?

Guess what? It DID STOP at every floor. I was groaning is mild misery. In jest, I ask the liftman, ‘Unlike others, why this lift stops at EVERY floor?’ He replied, “This lift is meant for goods’. 

In mock horror and in over smartness I said, ‘Oh lord. I have stepped into the goods lift’.

He nonchalantly replied, ‘All are goods only brother. You and me too. Somebody brought us in this world and some people will carry us out too’.

Thinking about me and my quip, he must have asked himself, “Where do these idiots come from?’

Needless to say, I was silent for the rest of the journey. So was my misery. My ego was crushed. I marveled at his simple yet profound wisdom.

Ramdas, the liftman taught me the most profound lesson of life. I felt blessed that I walked into the goods lift that day!
