Dearest Darling Friends,

In Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle describes three buckets of friendship.

1. ‘Friendship of utility’, It is one that’s useful for pragmatic purposes relating to matters of fact or practical affairs often to the exclusion of intellectual, ethical or artistic matters: Eg. It is an ‘I need you, you need me’ kind of a scenario. We all need enough of such friends in life. The world is NEVER ideal. So, often, it is mutual conveniences that make things happen. They will sugar coat things for you.

2. ‘Friendship for fun’ describes a friendship that lasts for as long as there is a shared fun activity. They are based on specific needs like travelling, sports, hobbies, even shopping for that matter, etc. I have a few gym friends! If something is not ok, they will look the other way.

3. ‘Friendship for good’ is a long-term friendship where folks are genuine well-wishers for each other and focus on each other’s goodness. These are friendships for life. They last through thick and thin. They have your back ALL the time. They will call a spade a spade and will sugar coat things for you.

Each one of us needs all three kinds of friends. Each one serves its purpose. Each one is important.

Friendships of utility make everyday life convenient. Friendships for fun helps us to de-stress. Friendships for life are the roots that give us the wings to fly.

The great news is, friendship for good is far more possible today than ever before. Why? It is because we are no longer limited geographically to only those who are near us. We also have greater mobility and better technology to stay in touch with friends for good even if they live 1000s of km away.

Have you ever identified who are your friends in each one of these buckets?

With love, prayers and exceptional wishes,

naren
