Dearest Darling Friends,
Here’s a question I like to ask myself every now and then:
If an unbiased observer watched me for a week, what would they say about me and my priorities?
Ouch!
It’s easy to claim that I know my priorities and I am doing what needs to be done.
It’s easy to say, ‘I am responsible’.
But what would an unbiased observer see? And say?
1. Would they see consistency, discipline, and focus?
2. Would they see procrastination, engagement in cheap thrills, and distraction?
Ouch again!
Would you agree with me when I say, there are two types of priorities in life:
1. The priorities I say you have.
2. The priorities my actions show I have.
One that we claim we have.
The other that we actually have.
And here’s the uncomfortable truth: For most of us, there is a huge gap between the two.
We say that we want to…
– build a great business
– create a solid second line
– let go of everything toxic
– get in shape
– invest quality time with our loved ones
Hmmm. The intentions are indeed right, but somewhere we lose grip on our own story.
And it all starts with a small slip.
– One morning we don’t ‘feel’ like exercising. It soon turns into a week, then month and then we wait for the new year resolution.
– One hire goes bad and we start believing, delegation is a farce and that we don’t get good people. We stop strategising and move full time into execution.
– One misunderstanding and all the toxic memories of the past rush in like a tsunami and we slip into a zone of pain and negativity.
– One ‘I need to take this call’ and the word quality from ‘quality family time’ goes for a toss.
We react to life instead of creating a life.
Hence, it’s a very powerful question – What would an unbiased observer say about ‘What are my priorities?’
I have realised, the answer is never found in intentions. It is always found in action.
Hence, I always remind myself, “Don’t tell me your priorities. Show me your priorities”.
With love, prayers and best wishes,
Change your thoughts. Change your life.
