Dearest Darling Friends,
You have probably seen it.
The meal is over.
The conversation has slowed.
The server is rushing to clean the tables.
Something interesting happens at this point.
Most simply push the chair back, gather their belongings and prepare to leave.
Sometimes, there is a person who behaves a bit differently.
They gather the plates and the bowls,
Stacks them neatly on the bigger plate,
For the server to take it away.
They ‘serve’ the server.
No announcement.
No applause.
No LinkedIn post about “humility and leadership.”
No selfies of the stacked plate for Insta with the title ‘This is how I help’
They silently perform that tiny act that makes the invisible (to most) server’s job just that bit easier.
‘That tiny act’ says a lot about a person.
Stacking plates is not really about plates.
It is about awareness and character.
It proves you put a high value to ‘dignity of labour’.
It shows you notice the ‘invisible work’ happening around you.
This work keeps systems moving but rarely gets applause.
It is also about respect.
You understand that dignity is not exclusively reserved for titles, corner offices, or the financially successful.
It belongs equally to the person clearing your table.
It signals you take complete ownership to making a difference.
Over the years, I have noticed something fascinating.
The people who quietly stack plates at restaurants are often the same people who:
- Lift morale when the chips are down
- Take responsibility when things go wrong
- Build cultures of equal opportunities, great accountability and respect for all.
These people who instinctively help in small moments usually do the same in larger arenas of life too.
In teams.
In families.
In businesses.
They don’t say:
“That’s not my job.”
They say:
“How can I make this easier for everyone?”
This is not because someone trained them to.
It is because our character travels with us everywhere.
The dining table simply reveals it.
Observation Experiment
Here is a curious little experiment I propose.
Next time you are out for a meal with family, friends, colleagues, or clients…
Just notice what happens when the meal ends.
Who pushes the chair away and gets ready to leave and who stacks the plates?
A stack of plates can tell you more about a person than an entire résumé.
By the way, do you know of someone who stacks the plates?
TAG them in the comments so that the world knows about them.
Isn’t it surprising how much wisdom hides in life’s tiny moments. 🍽️ Touché
