Dearest Darling Friends,
David Goggins’ book “Can’t Hurt Me” is filled with lessons that are as tough as nails and as motivating as a coach screaming in your ears that you are ‘Born to Win’.
Here are my top 10 lessons from that book. I am attempting to serve it with a dash of wit and a sprinkle of puns:
1. Embrace the Suck: Life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, sometimes it’s more like a torrential downpour. Goggins teaches us to embrace the suck, to lean into the discomfort, because that’s where growth happens. So, the next time life gives us lemons, don’t just make lemonade. Make a lemonade stand and charge for it!” Haha!
2. Callous Your Mind: Just like callouses form on our hands from lifting weights, lets toughen up our mind. Goggins encourages us to push past our mental limits and suggests that the hardest work should be done when you want to quit. Remember, a mind is like a parachute; it doesn’t work if it isn’t open, and it’s useless if it’s full of holes.
3. Let actions do the talking: In a world full of noise, nobody likes that person who constantly brags about their marathon time or their latest fad diet or their past achievements. The superior man is modest in his speech but exceeds in his actions, said Confucius. In other words, let’s keep our bragging voice feeble and let the sound of our actions be deafening.
4. Stay Tough: Grief and resilience live together. Goggins encourages us to stay mentally tough in the face of adversity. When life throws obstacles your way, don’t curl up into a ball, or withdraw into a shell. Face them head-on like a Spartan warrior with a protein shake in hand. Ahah! I love this imagery! LOL!
5. Accountability Mirror: Goggins introduces us to the accountability mirror, where you stare your excuses in the face and tell them to ‘get lost’. This mirror reflects your inner critic, but instead of saying “You failed again,” it says “This is THE turning point of your life!” It always encourages, no matter what !!!
6. The 40% Rule: When you think you have hit your limit, you’re only at 40%. Goggins challenges us to push past that initial instinct to ‘give up’ or ‘stop’ and tap into the reserves we didn’t even know we had. It’s like finding a few extra notes in your wallet when you thought you had none. Delightful, isn’t it? That is what you feel when learn how to push yourself just that little bit more.
7. Stay Humble, Stay Hungry: Goggins reminds us to never get complacent. No matter how many mountains we have climbed or records we have broken, there’s always room for improvement. It’s like being the reigning champion but still showing up to practice on time for the champion knows he still has a lot of stuff inside.
8. Make Some Waves: Goggins urges us to stop playing it safe and scared. He exhorts us to start exploring our potential. He says. “It’s time to stop tiptoeing through life and start making some noise”. True that for after all, you can’t make waves if you’re stuck in the kiddie pool.
9. Choose Company Carefully: Surround yourself with people who challenge you to be better, who believe in you, who inspire you. Goggins reminds us to choose our company very wisely. It makes all the difference. If you are in a race where everyone else is slow jogging, what are the chances you will be sprinting?
10. Always Point North: On being tempted, we tell ourselves that it is ok to compromise on our values. Our justification is, ‘So many people are doing it too’. Goggins teaches us that no amount of success is worth sacrificing our integrity. So, be like a compass, always pointing north, even when everything else is spinning around you.
So, grab life by the horns, channel your inner Goggins, and show the world what you’re made of!
And yes, let me know which of these 10 lessons resonates with you.
